Homemade Happy Birthday Cake – For Samoyeds Like Me!
A short while ago, I posted a recipe for my Grandma Carole’s famous “Grandma Treats” which are her homemade dog biscuits. So many people said they loved that recipe that I asked Grandma Carole if I could also share her famous Happy Birthday Cake recipe for dogs too. And she said yes. Woo-hoo!
My Grandma Carole started baking this birthday cake for my sister Zoya back in the late 90s and she continues to make this for my birthday even to this day. And I love it! It almost takes the sting out of getting another year older! It’s a good thing my birthday is in September. It’s almost Cake Time baby!
The best thing about this particular birthday cake recipe is that this one includes beef jerky pieces. What the what?! Are you kidding me?! BEEF JERKY!! Woo-hoo! Other than bacon, I’d say that’s about my favorite thing ever.
Okay, here are the steps for this quick, easy, and barkilicious Birthday Cake Recipe!
Recipe for Grandma’s Homemade “Happy Birthday Cake”
- 3/4 cup cornmeal
- 3/4 cup up bleached white flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (Grandma says to use regular NOT white whole wheat)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon molasses
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1 cup water
- Beef jerky treats torn into 1/4 inch pieces
- 8 ounce package cream cheese. (Optional)
Stir together the cornmeal, flours, baking soda and baking powder in medium sized bowl. Next, add molasses, egg and water. My grandma uses her KitchenAid – 4.5 Quart Stand Mixer and it goes in seconds. Stir in jerky pieces until well distributed in dough. Spread dough evenly into a greased 8-inch square cake pan.
Baking, Cream Cheese, and Storage – Oh My!
Bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool completely. Spread cream cheese on top of the cooled cake (be careful, if you spread it too thinly it will crack after a while. That’s what Grandma says anyway.) Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Makes about 16 2 X 2 inch servings. And remember, when you’re finished baking the Happy Birthday Cake to turn off your oven! Safety first humans, safety first.
STORAGE HINT: Label the birthday cake “For the Dog” to avoid human consumption! This is important because I don’t want any of you humans eating my birthday cake! You guys get your own!
So there you have it! Best doggie happy birthday cake recipe ever! And just like the “Grandma Treats” they’re pretty simple to make. I’m pretty sure that if my white hairy paws wouldn’t get all kinds of fur all over the cake, I could even do it myself! But I prefer that Grandma Carole makes it for me. 🙂
If you have any questions about the recipe, please leave them for me below. I’ll ask my Grandma Carole and get back to you. But more importantly, if you make this homemade Happy Birthday Cake Recipe, please come back and tell me what you think!
Until next time Mr. Diary!
