KONG is King – Product Review of our Samoyed’s Favorite Dog Toy

Despite the Success of the Movie, this KONG is King in Sacha’s Opinion

KONG in King!

I’ve seen tons of advertisements about the movie “Kong: Skull Island” and honestly, I can’t wait to see it. Looks like tons of fun and stars John C. Reilly, one of my favorite actors.

But this review obviously isn’t about the latest King Kong movie, it’s about the KONG Ball, which is king in our household. It’s the awesome dog toy that Sacha just loves!

Truth be told, we’ve been buying KONG products for all of our Samoyeds for years. They are incredibly durable and so well made, and I don’t think we’ve ever had any kind of an issue with them. They’re particularly great for a big breed like Samoyeds because KONG products are able to withstand their powerful jaws.

Doggie Toys for the New Year – Part 1

Merry New Year!

The tennis ball still remains one of my favorite toys. And I do look stylin’ in my Cubs hat.

Happy New Year from all of your friends, furry and otherwise, at The Smiling Samoyed. We’re looking forward to a great 2017 and hope that you are too!

To kickoff the new year in the right way, we thought we’d talk about some fun toys that you can investigate for all of your furry friends. We sort of did something like this for the summer season, so it seems fitting we should do this one as well to kickoff the new year. This will be Part 1 and we’ll kickoff Part 2 shortly.

Although Sacha hasn’t tried all of these, they do seem either fun, intriguing, or at a great price that they’re worth your consideration. If any of these sound like they’re worth investigating, just click on the product name to learn more and purchase if you choose. So with that, let’s get to it!

 4. Flying Frisbee

Who doesn’t like throwing the frisbee around with your pooch right? Well actually I don’t. Sacha can only be off leash in a fenced in dog park or back yard so we don’t get the opportunity to do much of this. But if we did, this would be the type of thing he’d enjoy!

5. Tennis Balls

As you can see from the above photo, Sacha’s favorite toy is still the regular old tennis ball. There are tennis courts on the property where we live now and Sacha is always looking to steal stray tennis balls no matter how gross they are.
And while that keeps down the costs, we do like to give him new tennis balls to chew on his well. This brand seems to be his favorite vintage and are sold on Amazon.

Hopefully that will give you a few ideas to get you started for the new year. What is your dog’s favorite toy? Please leave a comment and let me know!
Happy New Year and we’ll see you again soon for Part II!

Dog Diapers – Puppy Pads that are Good for Dogs with Incontinence

Dog Diapers – Ramius’s Favorite Brand

If you’ve been reading our retrospective series about Ramius’s fight with cancer, you’ve seen how bravely he dealt with radiation treatments. One of the side effects though was that he had “Juicy Booty,” meaning his poop was soft and would tend to leak out.

Which in the grand scheme of things really isn’t that big of a deal. But, you’ll want some sort of a diaper for your pooch to keep your house and car clean. Along with your pup of course. Continue reading

Ezy Dose Pill Organizer – Product Review

Great Tool to Keep Medication Safe and Organized

If you’ve been reading our series about our Samoyed Ramius’s battle with cancer, you have a sense of the ordeal he went through before passing away. If not, I encourage you to read all four parts to date of this continuing retrospective of Ramius’s Journey.

Ezy Dose Pill Organizer

Ezy Dose Pill Organizer

We’ll be discussing this in later additions to the series, but one of the things you face when you’re caring for a sick dog is managing their medication. And when you’re fur baby has a series disease like cancer, managing the medication can be daunting. Very daunting in fact, and confusing.

One great and inexpensive tool that helped us tremendously was the Ezy Dose Push Button 7-Day XL Medtime Planner. Continue reading

Cruisin Canines – Our Recommended Dog Walkers for Chicago!

Professional Dog Walkers – Yes or No?

Today I want to talk to you in general about the importance of having a professional dog walker, and specifically recommend the company we use in Chicago called Cruisin’ Canines.

If you have a job that requires you to be gone for most or all of the day during the week, as many of us do, have you considered hiring a dog walker to take care of your pooch while you’re away? If you live in a neighborhood where you have the option to hire a professional dog walker, I highly recommend you look into it.

Zoya says, “Cruisin’ Canines Walked Me!”

As readers of this blog know, we’ve had a total of three Samoyeds dating back to 1996. First we had Zoya, then Ramius, and now of course Sacha. For our first couple of years with Zoya, we actually didn’t use a dog walker. And both my wife and I were gone all day every day during the week. Fortunately, we realized that situation wasn’t the best thing for Zoya, so we began investigating different dog walkers in our area. That’s when we found a company called Cruisin’ Canines that is run by the husband and wife team of Pam and Paul. Continue reading

Dog Friendly Hotels – Is Red Roof Inn Pet Friendly?

Raise the Roof, Roof, Roof!

Clean, Comfy Rooms from $49.99 at Select Locations

As dog owners, one of the challenges we face as we drive cross country is finding a place to stay that accommodates our pets. Fortunately, finding dog friendly hotels is a lot less challenging than it used to be, but it’s still something you need to think about and plan for before you hit the road.

Generally speaking, there are many motel chains these days that are very welcoming to dogs and other pets, and Red Roof Inn is one of them.

Now, I’m not going to spend a ton of time reviewing Red Roof Inn. If you’ve lived anywhere in the United States for the last 50 years you’ve surely seen them and probably stayed in one at some point. But it’s a great choice for parents. Why you ask? Read on! 🙂 Continue reading

Best Dental Treats for Dogs – Which Should You Get?

I Love Me Some Dental Chews and Treats! – Sacha’s Diary August 4, 2016

Dear Diary,

Usually, my Daddy does the product reviews around here, but I asked him if I could do this one because I love dental bones! Other than the homemade dog treats my Grandma Carole makes for me, these are my favorite treats in general! Dental or not! But, I like lots of treats so that may not be saying much 😉

And let me tell you, I hate to admit it, but I can be kind of a stinker if I don’t get my dental treats when I want them. You see, I know when Mommy and Daddy are getting ready in the morning, they’re a little harried. The last thing they want is to hear me barking and causing a ruckus. So what do I do? I stand by the closet where they keep the dental treats and bark until they give me one. Continue reading

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Review – Everything You Need to Know!

Here’s the Thing – Everybody Hates Their Pet Health Insurance

I know many people who have health insurance for their pets and honestly, I don’t know anybody that’s happy with it. Either it’s too expensive, or it won’t cover this, or it won’t cover that. Whatever it is, they don’t like it. Oh make no mistake, they still realize it’s better to have pet insurance than not to have it. But they’re just not satisfied with their current provider.

Whenever I hear this, I tell them that my wife and I love our pet health insurance. And then those people look at me like I’ve got antlers growing out my head (though then again…I seem to get that reaction a lot…perhaps it’s just me?). I tell them no, really, we’ve got great pet health insurance and we couldn’t be happier with it! I explain that there’s this fantastic company we’ve discovered and that they take excellent care of our furry family. That company is called Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Continue reading

Fromm Dog Food Reviews – Is Fromm Right for Your Samoyed?

Sacha’s Ideal Breakfast

I’m sure if we asked Sacha what to feed him (hey, maybe we will!), he’d tell us to feed him a nice plate of bacon like this every day. But…that’s probably not the most healthy & nutritious option we can come up with for him. Sorry Sacha!

Bacon Makes Me Happy!

One of the most vexing questions pet parents need to answer is what kind of dog food is best for their pooch. And the dog food manufactures certainly do their best to make it as confusing as possible for us don’t they? Should we feed our dogs dry food or wet food? Grain free or not grain free? Is your dog active or inactive? Large breed or small breed?

Adult…? Puppy…? Mature adult…?

We get it! The manufactures are telling us they can mass produce the perfect dog food for any specific dog breed, age, activity level, size, gluten preference, and eye color (okay I made the last one up). Continue reading
