Chicago Air & Water Show – Damn it Feels Good to be Dogsta!

Going to the Chicago Air & Water Show – Sacha’s Diary August 22, 2016

Chicago Skyline

Dear Diary,

Yesterday, my parents walked me down to Lake Michigan to watch the Chicago Air & Water Show. This was the 58th show which happens annually every August in Chicago over a weekend. It’s a pretty cool event and it’s free! Which doesn’t matter much to me, since I don’t pay the bills. But I know my Mommy and Daddy appreciate it! ๐Ÿ™‚

My parents tend to go most years but this was the first time I got to go too. Wow, was it loud! Lots of cool military aircraft flying around the city and the skyline. This year’s performers included the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights and the U.S. Navy Parachute Team Leap Frogs.

But the headliner this year were the famous U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Just below is a photo of a couple of them streaming across the Chicago sky.

U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds!

The Thunderbirds alternate every other year with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Both of them are amazing! It was a beautiful day by the lakefront and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many of you humans out in one place before. It was crazy! They say there were millions of you around! And there were lots of other dogs out there too. I get so excited when I see other dogs, I just want to play and play and play. My Daddy was eating chicken so I made sure I did that thing we dogs do where we look really cute and beg for food. And of course, he gave me some. Works every time. Silly Daddy!

Party Like a Rock Star

But I think the coolest thing about the whole day was all of the attention I got! There were a bunch of kids who had set up a little fort in front of us to help shade them from the sun. Which was a pretty smart idea. But anyway, as soon as they saw me, they all came over and petted me. They were all surprised about how soft and fluffy my fur is! That’s the way it is was us Samoyeds.

So many people came up to me throughout the whole day to say hello. They’d first ask my parents if they could pet me. I don’t know why they bother doing that. Of course they can pet me! I love attention! And I’m super friendly!

One thing that surprised me though was how many people didn’t seem to know what kind of breed I am. Strange isn’t it? I think there’s only like a dozen or so other kinds of dog breeds in the world right? And Samoyeds have to be the most popular. But, for some reason, a lot of people seem surprised. Some asked if I was a chow, others if I was a mixed breed, and one person even asked if I was a Saint Bernard. A Saint Bernard?! Pfffttt…Really? Here’s a picture of me from yesterday. Do I look like a Saint Bernard to you? Nope, didn’t think so. Silly humans…

Here I am at the lakefront enjoying the day.

I Get so Much Attention!

It was almost like a parade of people who came up to me throughout the day looking to pet me and give me some love. One woman in her early 20s came up to me and said she just had to pet me. She said she was staring at me all afternoon and just had to come over. Yeah…Samoyeds like me get that a lot ๐Ÿ˜‰

There was another guy sitting a few feet in front of us, who came over too. I think his name was Henry. He had his camera with him and took lots of pictures of me. Now Henry was very familiar with the Samoyed breed and he knew immediately right away it’s the kind of dog I am. He said he’s been thinking about getting a Samoyed himself, but wasn’t sure because he lives in a condo. Well, I live in a condo too and I love it! It’s fine to have a Samoyed in a condo in the city as long as you’re able to walk him and get him regular exercise.

Of course, you do need to pay special attention to keep us cool in the summer because we have lots of thick, fluffy, fur. One of the things that’s really important is to make sure you have plenty of fresh water around all the time. And if you’re out for a day by the lake, like we were yesterday, make sure you bring water and carry a portable water bowl with you. My parents had lots of bottled water for me, and I drank tons of it all day. It was a real life saver when you’re out in the sun let me tell you!

Good Information Here

There are lots of other things you can do to keep your dog cool in the hot weather. Fortunately, my Daddy wrote a blog post about that very subject earlier in the summer. He’s so smart, that Daddy of mine. Be sure to check it out.

My parents always say that the Chicago Air & Water Show signals to them it’s the unofficial end of summer. Which is great, amiright?! I mean winter is a MUCH better season don’t you think? I sure do like it, but seems like you humans hate it for some reason. Especially you humans who live in Chicago. Whatever. The Rest of My Day

So Henry and my parents talked for a bit more about me, and Henry promised to email the pictures he took of me to my parents. As soon as he does, we’ll put them up on the blog! Remember Henry, it’s

The entire rest of the day pretty much continued on like that. People would come over from time to time and pet me. Parents would bring their young children over to say hello. Lots of times, they’d ask if they could take my picture with their kids, and my parents always say yes. They know I’m a rock star. They get it. My picture must be up on like dozens of refrigerators this morning!

Finally, the Chicago Air & Water Show ended and it was time to walk home. As we did, another nice family came up to say hello. Now here’s where it gets REALLY interesting, the Dad said his name was Sacha too! What the what?! Can you believe that?! Another Sacha! I thought I was the only one but I guess not.

The whole family was very familiar with the Samoyed breed. They knew that Samoyeds like us originally come from Siberia. I think the family may have been from Russia, and they definitely seemed to know a lot. Sacha (the other Sacha not me! ๐Ÿ˜‰ even asked my parents if they know the origin of the name Samoyed. My Daddy responded that we’re named after the Samoyedic peoples. Other Sacha said no, we’re called Samoyeds because in Russia, that means we can get food all by ourselves.

Well, I’m not so sure about that. I’m pretty sure we are named after the Samoyedic peoples. And these days, I don’t know how good I’d be foraging for my own food. I rely pretty heavily on my parents to feed me great Fromm dog food. But, who knows? He is a Sacha and one thing about us Sacha’s is that we are very smart!

So that was about it. We came home and I crashed pretty hard in the nice cool air conditioning and had a yummy supper. Pretty cool to be a rock star Samoyed like me isn’t it? In fact, there’s this rap song I like which pretty much sums up my day. I think it’s called ‘Damn it feels good to a Dogsta!’ Or something like that ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well that’s about it for today.ย Please leave a comment if you went to the Chicago Air & Water Show over the weekend and let me know what you thought about it. Oh! And you’re somebody who came up to pet me or take my picture yesterday, please leave a comment! I’ll be sure to get back to you!

Until next time Mr. Diary! And just for today, I’ll end things this way inย honor of the late great John McLaughlin,ย “Bye Bye!”

I absolutely loved this post about the Samoyeds. Very interesting and unique writing, at first I thought I was going to be reading about an air show, which I have seen lots of. I don’t know why anyone would think Sacha was a Saint Bernard??? I guess I am familiar with a variety of breeds as I watch dogs on a regular basis and I have a Samoyed I watch named Kaluha. Great dog and very friendly just like your guy I am sure.

I know right MM?! How could anybody think I look like a Saint Bernard? That’s nuts! Perhaps there were some libations at hand that may have played a role. Thanks for commenting!

    Hey Mike,

Great article, I really like the way you wrote it. I enjoyed every word of it. Can’t say that I was familiar with Samoyeds before I read this, but what a cute and awesome looking dog. I wish I attended the show, would have definitely came over to say hi!

    Keep up the good work.
    All the best.

Thanks Joe! Actually I wrote the article, but truth be told, my Daddy did help me a little. So you got me there. Thanks for visiting the site and please come back again!

You are quite the beautiful dog! What a fun day with your family, too!

I’ve seen the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels and they are amazing to watch. Make sure you stay close to your family because they can get loud!

It’s very important to stay cool in the summer and stay away from getting too hot. I’m glad your dad created post to help educate folks about the dangers of heat.

You are very popular! Enjoy it!

What a cool dog you are. I am sure you had a great time even if it might have been a little hot for you in the summer sun. How anyone could mistake you for a St Bernard is really beyond me but well not everyone knows that much about dogs.
Couldn’t you cut some of that fur off for summer, or maybe it is not possible with your fur?
It was great fun to read about you and I will keep an eye on your site to learn more as I am also running a site about dogs.
