Doggie Toys for the New Year – Part 1

Merry New Year!

The tennis ball still remains one of my favorite toys. And I do look stylin’ in my Cubs hat.

Happy New Year from all of your friends, furry and otherwise, at The Smiling Samoyed. We’re looking forward to a great 2017 and hope that you are too!

To kickoff the new year in the right way, we thought we’d talk about some fun toys that you can investigate for all of your furry friends. We sort of did something like this for the summer season, so it seems fitting we should do this one as well to kickoff the new year. This will be Part 1 and we’ll kickoff Part 2 shortly.

Although Sacha hasn’t tried all of these, they do seem either fun, intriguing, or at a great price that they’re worth your consideration. If any of these sound like they’re worth investigating, just click on the product name to learn more and purchase if you choose. So with that, let’s get to it!

  1. Dog Chew Toys

Who doesn’t like a good chew toy amirite? These toys are pretty cheap and come in cool shapes like a duck, elephant, and pig. From the Bang Good website:

 4. Flying Frisbee

Who doesn’t like throwing the frisbee around with your pooch right? Well actually I don’t. Sacha can only be off leash in a fenced in dog park or back yard so we don’t get the opportunity to do much of this. But if we did, this would be the type of thing he’d enjoy!

5. Tennis Balls

As you can see from the above photo, Sacha’s favorite toy is still the regular old tennis ball. There are tennis courts on the property where we live now and Sacha is always looking to steal stray tennis balls no matter how gross they are.
And while that keeps down the costs, we do like to give him new tennis balls to chew on his well. This brand seems to be his favorite vintage and are sold on Amazon.

Hopefully that will give you a few ideas to get you started for the new year. What is your dog’s favorite toy? Please leave a comment and let me know!
Happy New Year and we’ll see you again soon for Part II!

Dog Diapers – Puppy Pads that are Good for Dogs with Incontinence

Dog Diapers – Ramius’s Favorite Brand

If you’ve been reading our retrospective series about Ramius’s fight with cancer, you’ve seen how bravely he dealt with radiation treatments. One of the side effects though was that he had “Juicy Booty,” meaning his poop was soft and would tend to leak out.

Which in the grand scheme of things really isn’t that big of a deal. But, you’ll want some sort of a diaper for your pooch to keep your house and car clean. Along with your pup of course. Continue reading

Dogs on the Bus – Amazon Launches Ride Share for Employees

The Dogs on the Bus Go Round and Round

I was reading this very cool article today that talked about how Amazon is launching a private shuttle for its Seattle employees to transport them to and from work. And employees will be able to take their dogs with them. Which is pretty much the coolest thing ever.

I want to commend Amazon and other companies who are going the extra mile to make things easier for dog owners. Dogs are a vital part of so many people’s lives, and we’re seeing progressive companies like this really try to improve the work life balance of their employees.

FetchFind is another forward thinking company that recently put out a recent blog series about Dogs in the Workplace that is definitely worth reading. I think things like this will continue to grow and get more important over time. Especially as the economy continues to improve and the competition stiffens for talented employees.

Smart employers know that smart employees like to have their dogs taken care of!

How to Introduce a New Puppy to Your Dog – Especially if They’re Samoyeds!

Sacha’s Diary – September 23, 2016

Dear Diary,

This will be a short blog entry because I’ve got so much to do today. Not sure how you humans do this work stuff all week long! We Samoyeds are known as a working breed, but all I can say to that is TGIF!

Sacha Surfing the Web - His Morning Ritual

Sacha Surfing the Web – His Morning Ritual

Anyway, I was surfing the web today getting my morning news, you know as one does, and I came across this great article talking about the right way to introduce a new pet to an existing pet. There’s a lot of good tips and information in that article which talks about three categories, dog meeting dog (my personal favorite!), cat meeting cat (meh…), cat meeting dog (double meh…).

This brought back fond memories for me because I was once that new dog being introduced into a house with an existing dog, my brother Ramius! Of course, I didn’t know he would was my brother back then. I was just 8 weeks old and out in the big, bad world for the very first time with my new mommy and daddy, new home, and new brother. Ah, the innocence of those halcyon days amirite? Continue reading

Do Dogs Know When You Leave? – Tips to Reduce the Stress

Sacha’s Diary, September 8, 2016

Dear Diary,

This past Saturday, my mommy and daddy left the house with a bunch of suitcases. And not only that, they had a friend of theirs, Ariel, staying over at the house the night before.

Sacha Chewing His Bone

Sacha Chewing His Bone

I know this pattern pretty well, and it always makes me nervous. When this happens, it means my parents are going out of town somewhere on a trip, and they’re not taking me with them. Usually, I go with them whenever we travel somewhere that’s close by, so if I’m not with them, they’re probably far away. This makes me sad 🙁

You see for me, I never know when they’re coming back. Is it the next day, next week, next month? I have no idea and it stresses me out! I know mommy and daddy are trying to tell me when they’ll be back, but you humans speak some sort of weird language and we Samoyeds never know what you’re saying. You frustrate me. Silly humans!

Anyway, there are some things I’d like to recommend to my readers out there that you can do to make things less stressful for your Samoyed while you’re out of town for a few days. All of these tips are things that work really well for me. Continue reading

Cruisin Canines – Our Recommended Dog Walkers for Chicago!

Professional Dog Walkers – Yes or No?

Today I want to talk to you in general about the importance of having a professional dog walker, and specifically recommend the company we use in Chicago called Cruisin’ Canines.

If you have a job that requires you to be gone for most or all of the day during the week, as many of us do, have you considered hiring a dog walker to take care of your pooch while you’re away? If you live in a neighborhood where you have the option to hire a professional dog walker, I highly recommend you look into it.

Zoya says, “Cruisin’ Canines Walked Me!”

As readers of this blog know, we’ve had a total of three Samoyeds dating back to 1996. First we had Zoya, then Ramius, and now of course Sacha. For our first couple of years with Zoya, we actually didn’t use a dog walker. And both my wife and I were gone all day every day during the week. Fortunately, we realized that situation wasn’t the best thing for Zoya, so we began investigating different dog walkers in our area. That’s when we found a company called Cruisin’ Canines that is run by the husband and wife team of Pam and Paul. Continue reading

Chicago Air & Water Show – Damn it Feels Good to be Dogsta!

Going to the Chicago Air & Water Show – Sacha’s Diary August 22, 2016

Chicago Skyline

Chicago Skyline

Dear Diary,

Yesterday, my parents walked me down to Lake Michigan to watch the Chicago Air & Water Show. This was the 58th show which happens annually every August in Chicago over a weekend. It’s a pretty cool event and it’s free! Which doesn’t matter much to me, since I don’t pay the bills. But I know my Mommy and Daddy appreciate it! 🙂

My parents tend to go most years but this was the first time I got to go too. Wow, was it loud! Lots of cool military aircraft flying around the city and the skyline. This year’s performers included the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights and the U.S. Navy Parachute Team Leap Frogs. Continue reading

Dogs that are Good Kids – Or Should I Say with Kids

How I Spent My Summer Vacation – Sacha’s Diary July 11, 2016

Time for me to Make the Diary!

Dear Diary,

Haha! See what I did there? I put “dogs that are good kids” in the blog post title. Now what I obviously meant to say is dogs that are good with kids. We Samoyeds are cute, but we’re not too good with the grammar sometimes. And I know I should change the title of the post, but it’s kinda funny so I think I’ll just leave it 🙂

Back to you Mr. Diary. This last week, I got to spend time up at our cottage in Wisconsin. Let me tell you, all of this blogging is tiring and I really needed the break! You know what that’s like, amiright friends?!

Well a week or so up on the lake was just what I needed to recharge my batteries. I love just hanging out our porch, enjoying the nice summer breezes, maybe even having a cold beverage or two. I don’t know why but my the water just seems to taste better out of my bowl up there.  Continue reading

Game of Thrones – Or Game of Bones – How Similar is the Direwolf Ghost to a Samoyed?

The runt of the litter! That one’s yours, Snow.” – Theon Greyjoy to Jon Snow.

Jon Snow's Ghost

Jon Snow’s Ghost

It’s Friday so I hope you’ll permit a post on the lighter side today. I wanted to have a bit of fun and talk about two of my favorite things, Samoyeds (obviously) and Game of Thrones.

I’m a GOT nerd; I’ve read all of the books, and I love the television show. And one of the things that immediately connected me to Game of Thrones were the direwolves, specifically Jon Snow’s direwolf Ghost.

And is it any wonder? Ghost happens

032 (4)

Ramius – You Know Nothing Jon Snow!

to look an awfully lot like a Samoyed doesn’t he? Take a look at Ghost and my beloved Ramius (RIP sweety) here on the right. Pretty similar looking aren’t they?

And as much as I do love Game of Thrones, they have been absolutely BRUTAL on their direwolves! Why do they do that?! Other than Arya’s direwolf Nymeria, whose status is unknown after she was sent away for her safety in Season 1 (though she must still be alive…right…right?), Ghost is the only direwolf we know FOR SURE is still alive.
